Healthy Eating in 5 Easy Steps
GLOBAL GOOD GROUP » Health 20 Feb 2012, 7:14 am CET
Getting through the day requires the energy to do so. While you’re at it, why not also enjoy your food while supplying your body with the necessary nutrients while managing your weight and lowering your risk of preventable diseases?
Make Fruits and Vegetables the Bulk of your Diet Many studies, including those conducted by the Harvard School of Public health recommend a diet that consists of no less than 4.5 cups of fruits and vegetables, this roughly equates to nine servings. The health benefits of F&V are innumerable. In addition to being great sources of fiber, iron, folic acid, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and potassium, the consumption of a number of vegetables and fruits lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Cardiovascular disease is best staved off by citrus fruits, including but not limited to grapefruit, lemons, limes, and oranges. Green leafy vegetables including mustard and collard greens along with spinach do this job as well along with their friends in the cruciferous vegetable family such as kale, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. Rather than enjoying potatoes, which are quickly turned into sugar, look towards legumes such as lentils, dried beans, and peas for a wealth of dietary fiber and protein.
Whole Grains are Key It’s important to come to grips with the fact that you really shouldn’t be eating any white grains, whether pasta, bread, or rice you are much better served with a selection of whole grains rich in B Vitamins, Vitamin E, and Phytonutrients. These are abundant, especially by comparison in oats, couscous, brown rice, and quinoa as well as whole grain breads and pasta. While men need 30g a day to a woman’s 20g it’s okay to exceed these levels when selecting whole grains. This selection will reduce your risk of diabetes, heart disease, diverticular disease, and will all but eliminate any constipation.
Low-Fat Proteins and Dairy are Preferred Beyond the fact that saturated fats wage a war against the waistline, they also increase the risk of abnormal heartbeats, high blood pressure, and the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaque. You live in a world that when eating protein and consuming dairy there are low or non-fat options. Select lean meats, skinless poultry, less fatty fishes, eggs, nuts and beans for your proteins. Additionally, when consuming dairy products, while you may be giving up some flavor you will not be giving up a good source of calcium when choosing low-fat cheeses and milk. Going backwards a step, look to fish at least twice a week as a protein choice.
Limit Your Salt and Sugar Intake
The American Heart Association recommends limiting sodium intake to a maximum of 2,300 mg per day. Quite simply, a high sodium intake causes high blood pressure more often than it doesn’t and is the primary risk factor for heart attack and stroke. Be vigilant when purchasing packaged food and take the extra moment to read nutrition labels. While they are there for legal reasons, they are an excellent source of information for the health conscious.
Added sugar is a killer. It might not be today, but some day it will catch up with you. Sugar provides no nutrients but is, obviously, quite high in calories. The sweet tooth is truly a curse but if you ween yourself away from soft drinks, candies, cakes, cookies, etc., it only becomes easier to avoid this killer or attacker of vanity.
Know your Caloric Needs Weight gains and losses are an inevitability in life, but maintaining some semblance of a caloric balance can reduce these swings. It really is quite simple to determine where you need to be. The consumption of more calories than you burn each day, not surprisingly leads to weight gain. Conversely, well you get it. Your caloric needs will need to be worked out on your own, but a steady amount of low-energy-dense foods like fruits and vegetables provide a large volume of food with fewer calories owing to their water content. Revisit step one of this guide and remember the importance of a plate half-filled with fruits and vegetables.

How Running Too Much Can Hurt You: Marathoner’s Health Concerns
GLOBAL GOOD GROUP » Health 20 Feb 2012, 6:06 am CET
When we think of a marathon, images
of tough men and women immediately come to mind, which leads many
of us to believe that this sport is all about keeping the body fit
and healthy. Unfortunately, there is a darker side to this sport
that many of us are not aware of.
Running more than 26 miles is a supreme test of your endurance, as it places extreme strain and pressure on every joint and muscle in your body. By subjecting your body to excessive stress, your health can be compromised.
Recently a number of athletes have yielded to injuries and even death during marathons. Jim Fixx, for instance, died in 1982 of arteriosclerosis, while 27 year old Ryan Shay made his final run during the 2007 US Olympic marathon. It is this growing concern that has spurred many researchers to study the different health concerns that every marathon runner should be aware of.
1. Enlarged Heart
While it is fairly obvious that running can take its toll on your cardiovascular system, a number of marathon runners also suffer from an enlarged heart. As the body scrambles to compensate for its needs by pumping more blood, the heart has a tendency to expand. At this stage, athletes can easily fall into arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), which can eventually trigger a fatal heart failure.
2. Hyponatremia
Marathon runners are known to gulp gallons of water during a race to keep their body hydrated. But what many may not know is that water can strip away sodium from your body, much as in sweating, which can lead to cardiac arrest. To prevent hyponatremia from ruining your game, it’s best to limit your water intake to roughly 13 to 27 ounces on a per hour basis.
3. Hyperthermia
Apart from supplying the body with oxygenated blood, the heart is responsible for controlling the body’s temperature. During a rigorous marathon race, the humidity and dehydration pushes your internal temperature to skyrocket, which can lead to disorientation, muscle strains, and loss of consciousness.
4. Bodily Injuries
As if pounding on hard concrete were not enough, participating in a marathon gives your musculoskeletal system a terrible thrashing. Finishing that 26.2 mile journey takes anywhere from 30,000 – 50,000 steps, and each time your foot pounds on the ground, your muscles are placed under unbelievable stress. Under this constant strain, a runner’s body can suffer from tendinitis, shin splints, heel spurs, and fatigue, and over time, the body will succumb to muscular damage, ligament tears, and inflammation that can render any runner incapacitated.
Running a marathon takes more than just commitment, it requires that you keep your body safe and intact at the end of a very long run.
When not training for the marathons, Jimmy is a fitness writer for IdealFeet.com where he primarily focuses on the benefits of custom orthotics for foot pain and educating athletes on the causes for common heel injuries.
Top 5 Healthiest Fast Food Joints
GLOBAL GOOD GROUP » Health 16 Feb 2012, 9:34 pm CET
Fast food restaurants are not traditionally noted for healthy food selections. In fact, many fast food joints have unhealthy, high calorie foods. Though the restaurants are not known for good health, new changes to menus and consumer concerns about getting and staying healthy have lead the way to healthier fast food restaurants.
Panera Bread
Panera Bread is considered the top rated fast food restaurant due to the wide variety of healthy food choices available on the menu. Since many of the food options are deli style meals, many of the foods are low in calories and fat content. According to NBC, the choices that made Panera Bread stand out most from other restaurants was the healthy whole grain and half-portion options available on the menu. Even the selections for children’s meals are healthy with all-natural peanut butter and organic yogurt to help parents find healthy choices for their young ones.
Jason’s Deli
The second place healthy fast food dining experience is a chain that is only available in the mid-west, southern and mid-atlantic regions. Jason’s Deli is an up and coming restaurant with a great deal of potential. The deli became the number two choice due to the use of organic ingredients in sandwiches and the devotion to healthy portion sizes. Though the deli offers a wide range of options and creative salads to meet any personal taste, Shine.com warns to watch for sodium content in the sandwiches. Some of the sandwiches can have a higher sodium content than many might expect.
Au Bon Pain
Au Bon Pain is a long-time health food option favorite that has pioneered the health craze in fast food. While the menu has long included healthy food options, the part of Au Bon Pain that made it stand out from the competition for healthy variety is their new change to portion sizes. The restaurant is now offering foods with a portion size equaling 200 calories, making it ideal for those who are trying to cut back on caloric intake.
Noodles and Company
For those who enjoy various styles of noodles, Noodles and Company is the healthy fast food joint to add to a list of choices. Though it falls into the fourth place spot on healthiest fast food ratings, the use of whole grain noodles, soybean oil and hormone-free meats makes the restaurant stand out from the crowd. Another feature that made Noodles and Company part of the top five list of healthy fast food restaurants is the ability to opt for smaller portion sizes. It is not necessary to have an extra large serving of noodles when trying to reduce caloric intake.
Corner Bakery Café
The final contender of the healthiest fast food joints is the Corner Bakery Café. Unlike the other restaurants, the Corner Bakery Café is most well-known for the healthy breakfast options rather than the lunch and dinner menu. Those who are interested in a healthy breakfast can enjoy stopping at the restaurant for some of the best foods available quickly in the morning. Though it is known for the healthy breakfast, the salads and other meals available on the menu are also healthier than most fast food restaurants, which firmly set it in place among the top five. All of the top five fast food restaurants have something to offer that is unique and healthy, but they still require caution when picking out a meal. Paying attention to the calories, fat intake and sodium is still a necessity since some items on the menu do not fall into healthy food categories.

Healthy Eating
GLOBAL GOOD GROUP » Health 16 Feb 2012, 7:43 am CET
You are what you eat is such a true statement. Regardless of your weight, if you aren’t feeding yourself properly, you can suffer in many areas of your life. Although there are other aspects that can affect how you feel like your stress level, your personal health history, or even genetics, healthy eating will help to improve your life immensely.
Stress
At some point in our lives we become stressed. Many times, we are unable to avoid the stressors and must simply push through it. The stress in our life can be occasional or constant and can last from just a few moments at a time to years on end. Since there isn’t much that can be done to eliminate stress, we need to learn how to work through it.
Many of us will alter our eating habits when stressful times arise and this can be detrimental to our bodies. Maintaining healthy eating habits all of the time, regardless of outside forces, is of the utmost importance. Your body has enough to deal with when stress is involved, don’t fuel the fire by adding unhealthy food to it.
Busy Schedule
Let’s face it, our lives our busy. There are always other more important things going on that take precedent to what we are putting in our bodies. It’s difficult to plan and prepare three healthy meals and snacks in between. It is very important to make sure that you figure out how to get the food you need when you need it.
There are many ways in which to accomplish this. The easiest way is to have easy to prepare breakfasts and lunches. Figure out what works for you, your lifestyle, and your family. The solution for dinners is to only cook a few days a week and make enough to freeze for the other days when you will not have time to cook. If you are someone who doesn’t like to cook or you don’t have the resources to cook, like a stocked kitchen, there are companies that provide all of the kitchen ware and the recipes for you to be able to cook full meals. With these places, you simply take the food for the recipes and storage containers and do all of your cooking there. If you are not able or willing to do any of these things and have the financial resources, there are companies and individuals who will do your cooking for you.
Social Life
Many of us are social beings, some more than others. That social life can lead to consumption of many unwanted calories. It is easy to sit down with friends for a meal at your favorite restaurant, order your favorite dish, and possibly consume a few calorie filled beverages. Do this enough and you have consumed more fatty foods than you even want to think about.
Don’t think that you will need to cut back on your social life just because you want to cut back on the calories and make more healthy eating choices. Instead, plan accordingly. Eat a healthy, filling meal before going out with your friends so that you won’t be tempted to eat your fill when out. This will help you to order something small and enjoy the food more. Also, when it comes to your beverages, alcoholic or not, limit yourself to one or two glasses and have a full glass of water in between.
Why Making Healthy Choices is so Important
Not putting the right nutrients in our bodies can have long lasting effects. Weight gain is the most prominent effect to not making right choices. Weight gain can lead to health issues that can be detrimental to your long-term health. Weight gain can also lead to lethargy and low self esteem. These two factors can continue to spiral you down until it seems too difficult to get out of the spiral.
Another effect of not getting the right nutrients in your body is hair loss. Lack of protein and essential vitamins can contribute to hair loss over time. Hair loss is much more difficult to remedy than the other effects of not making the right choices when it comes to eating.
Eating the right foods is important to all facets of your life, short term and long. Make the right choices now so that you can start on getting on the right track for your future. Help yourself to feel better physically and mentally. Start slow and work your way into a complete life change so that you can improve your life overall.

Four Ways HulaFlex Exercise Systems Can Help You Save
GLOBAL GOOD GROUP » Health 16 Feb 2012, 1:40 am CET
When people think of home
exercise equipment, they often think of a few stereotypical
adjectives: “expensive,” “huge” and “hassle” are some that might
come to mind.
However, exercise bands, like the HulaFlex system, are the opposite of all of these things. In fact, they can often save you a lot in terms of time, money, space and more. Read on to discover how a simple oval exercise band can help you tone up and a lot more.
1. Bid adieu to gym memberships fees.
One of the biggest benefits of buying home exercise equipment is that you don’t have to pay for costly gym membership fees anymore. Gyms can cost tens of dollars per month. Although $20 or $30 per month doesn’t seem like much at first, it adds up. In addition to the base price of $240 – $360 per year for remaining an active member, gyms often charge a lot of hidden fees like an annual bill for yearly membership upkeep, cancellation fees and more.
Home exercise equipment, on the other hand, is a one-time purchase that often pays itself off in a few months that you would have spent paying for gym fees. Especially when you purchase one or two pieces of equipment that can work out your whole body, you may end up spending under $100.
2. Downsize on apartment/home space.
Another thing that you can save, with HulaFlex in particular, is space. Whereas other home exercise pieces, like rowing machines, back workout equipment, abdominal crunchers and treadmills, often necessitate a separate “workout” room, resistance bands don’t require anything in terms of space.
You can store flexible workout bands anywhere you have room: in a drawer, under your bed, in a closet, etc. You also don’t need tons of space to perform the actual workouts: As long as you have a spot in your bedroom, living room or outside where you can exercise, you are good to go.
3. Save on gas.
Something that many people don’t consider in the cost of attending a gym is the price of gas. When you have a home workout routine, you can cut down on your gasoline costs (or public transportation fares) because you don’t need to leave home to do it.
4. Save on time.
Home exercise equipment can also save you untold amounts of time. Now you can just spend 30 minutes to an hour on your exercise routine, rather than packing gym bags, driving to and from the gym, sitting in traffic on the way there and back and more.
Home exercise equipment can make your life easier in many ways. Go online today to find out how you can purchase a resistance band that works out your entire body.

Can I Be a Vegan Athlete? Tips to Getting the Right Nutrition
GLOBAL GOOD GROUP » Health 15 Feb 2012, 7:12 pm CET
There
is a myth surrounding athletes and sports nutrition: you must be a
meat eater to succeed. This myth has been dis-proven again and
again by superstar, vegan athletes. You do need to take in an
adequate, correct amount of nutrition, however, to say that you
must eat meat and animal products to do so, is just plain bull; pun
intended.
Current Veggy Athletes
If you’re finding it hard to believe that you can be a stellar athlete and eat a strictly plant-based diet, just ask these people what they think:
- Jane Black: vegan for over 20 years, Jane won the Best Lifter trophy at the Masters World Weightlifting Championships in 1996. - Brendan Brazier: this Ironman triathlete won the Canadian 50km Ultra Marathon twice, 3rd place in the National Long-Course Triathlon Championships and is a medal holder in two Royal Victoria Marathons. - Mac Danzig: this vegan and animal rights advocate is a mixed martial arts fighter and the winner of The Ultimate Fighter 6. - Scott Jurek: Scott has one the Badwater Ultra Marathon twice, running a total of 135 miles over mountains and through Death Valley. - Carl Lewis: this well known vegan has ten Olympic medals under his belt and has been named Athlete of the Year three consecutive times.
If you are new to researching the vegetarian and vegan lifestyles, some of the names on the list may have surprised you. Did they? It often surprises many people to find out that you can be a vegan and, not only get enough protein in your diet, but be so nutritionally sound in your eating habits that you can excel in athletics.
Transitioning to a vegan diet doesn’t have to be difficult or overwhelming for anyone. If, however, you are an athlete looking to transition to a plant-based diet, it may be more important for you to do so correctly than it would be for the average Joe or Jane. You should begin by figuring out the exact amount of nutrients, such as protein, that you need on a daily basis to maintain your muscle mass.
Because the body can only process 30g of protein at a time, many athletes will eat several small meals throughout the day. This makes transitioning to a vegan diet fairly simple; replace one protein in a single meal with one that is plant-based. After a week, replace one protein in two-meals and so on. Continue in this manner until you have fully transitioned to a vegan diet.
Getting enough protein without consuming meat or other animal products is actually quite simple. Beans, legumes and seeds are high in protein as are meat-replacement products made of soya beans. Cereals, pulses and nuts are also protein rich and can be used alone or in combination to make up for the protein you lose by skipping those tasty steaks. There is also a gram of protein in every serving of vegetables!

Will Fast Food Delivery Make us Fatter?
GLOBAL GOOD GROUP » Health 15 Feb 2012, 4:51 pm CET
Recently a few select Burger
King Restaurants in the Washington DC area have been quietly
testing home delivery. If successful, it may put the company ahead
in the fast food wars. Until now home delivery has been limited to
certain types of food, for example pizza or Chinese food, but there
might be a market for fast food home delivery.
Other food chains have been delivering for quite some time; subs, hoagie sandwiches, etc. Some delivery companies even use special containers to deliver takeout food from restaurants that don’t deliver. “There are some real food-quality issues here,” says Ron Paul, president of research firm Technomic. “But there’s no question that consumer expectation for having things delivered has risen.” All kinds of restaurants have been looking into catering and delivery options as a way to stretch their markets.
Burger King has developed a “proprietary thermal packaging technology,” says Jonathan Fitzpatrick, Chief Brand and Operations Officer for Burger King, “which ensures the Whopper is delivered hot and fresh, and the French fries are delivered hot and crispy.” Delivery is the focus because customers don’t want soggy burgers and limp fries delivered to their homes.
With a $2.00 delivery fee, minimum orders are between $8 and $10. Delivery times are approximately 30 minutes and customers must live within a 10 min drive. All of which are pretty standard in the food delivery services.
Most of the feedback focuses on the not-so-healthy aspects of fast food. The first is concerning healthy options. Everyone knows that fast food is not good for you. Fast food is high in fat and fried, processed foods and sweet deserts are to blame for many physical difficulties and obesity. People who already live an unhealthy lifestyle aren’t likely to benefit by having fast food home delivery as an option. They will likely continue with their poor eating habits.
With a large percentage of the population paying better attention to the quality of their food and to proper nutrition, fast food and other restaurants have been changing their menus to offer healthier ingredients in their meals. Special meals for kids, usually marketed with colorful packaging and toys that tie in with popular media, now offer everything from milk to fruit snacks and other healthy choices.
Another concern is similar to the first; having food delivered requires less effort than going out to get it. Many assume that with more businesses, grocery stores, and restaurants making deliveries, an already lazy and sedentary population will become more so.
If the question is will it work; the answer has to be maybe. Other countries and even some of the more populous areas in the US have delivery services for any number of wants. And Domino’s, whose business is 70% delivery, is watching — with a smile. “We wish them luck,” spokesman Tim McIntyre says. “There is a reason that not all pizza places deliver: It isn’t easy.”

Five Big Pieces to the Gym Puzzle: How Not to Fail
GLOBAL GOOD GROUP » Health 9 Feb 2012, 6:23 pm CET
Gym time. This can be a dreaded time for many or an amazing time for others. It all depends on the person who is going, trying to go or thinking about going to the gym. There are plenty of consistent gym-goers just as there are plenty of inconsistent gym-goers.
It’s difficult for some to start up the process of exercising but maybe even harder for most to keep it going. For those who are able to go to the gym regularly may still become unhappy with the results, but the reality may be that they are not trained in proper techniques or simply didn’t receive any pieces of advice to help them along.
There are definitely parts to the gym process that could help some keep along their targeted path.
Cardio
Cardio is a very important part to working out at the gym, although, some make a mistake of doing just cardio. Cardio will help gym-goers lose body fat, but just cardio could lead to decreased muscle mass and metabolism. For this reason, strength training should always accompany cardio. Also a tip for cardio: the heart must sustain a high enough heart rate level to make it the most effective. If the movement is too slow, there will be no results.
Challenge
Going to the gym must be challenging. No matter what a gym-goer does, there must be resistance. Resistance in weights. Resistance in movement. Just moving through the motions won’t do much for a body. Once the resistance is comfortable, pushing harder is the next move. Stay out of the body’s comfort zone. If it’s easy, then it’s not doing anything for muscles or any other parts of the body.
Distractions
Just as with most activities, distractions are never helpful. While going to the gym that is what should be focused on. Running, stretching, exercising. If there is socializing, texting, reading, talking on the phone, then there is no exercising. Focus on being healthy. Focus on the body’s movements. Everything else can wait until the gym doors close.
Consistency
There must be consistency in gym visits. Twice this week, once next month and nothing in between will not produce any results. Consistent visits will help keep the body in a routine and help the healthy process continue. Not being consistent will only mean the process will start over and again every time the visit resume. Pick a time, be consistent and keep it going.
Planning
Have a plan. It’s the same as having a goal. No plan. No goals. This is not the way to work out at the gym. It’s better to know what direction to be traveling, what weight to be lost or gained, which machines will get the best results, how many times a week, what part of the bodies to work on and so on. The answers to these questions keep gym-goers on task and focusing.
Final Thoughts
The gym is a great place to get the exercise that is needed while maintaining a healthy lifestyle; but if a busy person has to work harder to make the time to visit the gym, he or she should do the best they can to get the most out of the time there. Keep these pieces to the Gym Puzzle together and anyone can get a great-feeling, productive workout every time.

New and Exciting Research Gives Hope to Chronic Migraine Sufferers

here.
As anyone who suffers from migraines can tell you, experiencing a migraine headache—characterized by throbbing pain, sensitivity to light, nausea, and vomiting—can be debilitating. And what’s more, migraines can be quite difficult to manage or cure. Chronic migraine sufferers often experience frustration as they visit doctor after doctor, hoping for a solution to their problem.
However, new and exciting research published in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal suggests that migraines can be treated via new advances in the field of plastic surgery, with often staggering results. In fact, 82 of 89 patients noticed at least a 50% improvement in the frequency, intensity, and duration of their migraines over the course of a five-year study.[1]
Here’s how it works: four trigger sites—frontal, temporal, nasal, and occipital—have been identified as possible contributors of migraine headaches. Surgical treatment of these sites may provide long-lasting improvement. The patient’s trigger point is diagnosed after a careful evaluation by the plastic surgeon, who asks questions regarding the location of the patient’s pain. Patients with pain over the frontal, temporal, or occipital areas are further tested with a nerve block or Botox until the site is identified.
Once a trigger site is identified, the plastic surgeon will use the treatment method that corresponds with the site. Here’s a brief overview of the four trigger sites and the way they are treated:
1. The Frontal Area—Treatment is similar to a technique used during brow lift surgery and involves removing the corrugator muscles that surround sensitive nerves. 2. The Temporal Area—Migraines in this area occur because of a branch of a certain nerve called the trigeminal nerve, which is removed via avulsion (essentially, pulling it away). 3. The Nasal Area—This type of migraine is often caused by a deviated septum. Fixing a deviated septum has the added benefit of improving breathing. 4. The Occipital Area—This migraine is treated by releasing the occipital nerve from constricting bands, blood vessels, or muscles.
A limited number of plastic surgeons in the United States are trained in this still nascent field. However, the results are so exciting—even life-changing—for so many individuals that the field is expected to grow, giving hope to migraine sufferers everywhere.

Long Distance Trucking and Your Health
GLOBAL GOOD GROUP » Health 8 Feb 2012, 6:07 am CET
Many people wouldn’t consider truck driving as an occupation that presents health hazards, and many people would be wrong. Driving big rigs can lead to health issues that most wouldn’t stop to think about. If you’re a truck driver, or love someone who is, it’s imperative that you make yourself aware of the potential health risks that go hand-in-hand with long distance trucking.
1. Fatigue
Fatigue is, year after year, the number one health related risk for truck drivers. Not only can chronic fatigue lead to other health problems, but it is often the root cause of at-fault accidents involving truckers.
2. Backache
If you’ve ever driven, or ridden, over a long distance in any motor vehicle, you know the stress that driving that distance can place on your back. Sitting in the same position, with very little respite, can cause chronic back pain. This is especially so in the case of OTR driving.
3. Poor Nutrition
No matter how hard they try, most truckers will tell you that they fail to eat properly on a regular basis. With very little choice in where to park a big rig, many truckers are relegated to eating from rest area pit-stops that serve greasy, meaty fare. A lack of proper nutrition, over the long-term, can lead to a myriad of health problems.
4. Smoking
Many long-distance drivers take up a smoking habit simply as a way to relieve the boredom that OTR driving can cause. Everyone knows that smoking can lead to long term health issues including, but definitely not limited to, lung problems, heart problems and even cancer.
5. Stress
Stress may feel as though it is all mental, but it can present a very real danger to your overall physical health. Those suffering from chronic stress are more likely to experience fatigue, muscle aches and migraine headaches.
What Can You Do?
As a truck driver, it is important to maintain your health to the best of your ability. Simple steps you can take:
- Eat properly: whenever possible, trade the fatty, fried fast foods with healthier options. - Exercise: get out of your truck whenever possible and walk a few laps around the rest area or just perform a few simple stretches to get the blood flowing. - Sleep: don’t be tempted to skip sleep to reach your destination quicker. Be sure to get an adequate amount of sleep each night. - Quit smoking: the faster you quit smoking, the sooner your body will rebound. Stopping now may lessen your chance for developing chronic illnesses later in life.
Living life on the road often brings with it a host of ailments. Many of these problems can be avoided if you just know how to keep yourself healthy. Follow the basic tips above and you’ll remain as healthy as possible for as long as possible, even on the open road.

Can Health Insurance Save You Money?
GLOBAL GOOD GROUP » Health 8 Feb 2012, 6:03 am CET
Indeed it can, but chances are you’ve never really consider this cost reducing move. Most of us tend to regard insurance as a necessary evil. From a psychological standpoint, we spend a given amount of money on a yearly basis on our health insurance policy and, more often than not, we never reap ‘the benefits’. Of course, those of us who are lucky enough never to have to use our health insurance policies acknowledge the situation as a positive one. And so, we go on, year in and year out, doling out hard-earned cash which we hope we will never have to use. This situation, frustrating as it may seem at a first glance, can easily become beneficial. Have you ever thought about how something as simple as a health insurance comparison can actually save you money? In case you haven’t, find out more about the steps to this process below.
Assess Your Living Situation
The first thing you need to do before actually completing a health insurance comparison is to think back on when you first took out that insurance policy. How many years ago did that happen? What has changed since? For one thing, you have aged. Perhaps you have had one or several children in the meantime, perhaps one or more of your children have moved away from home, or perhaps (albeit this is rather unlikely) your living situation has stayed exactly the same. In most scenarios, however, living and family arrangements shift ever so subtly from year to year. The result is that you end up paying for services you don’t really need, or, better put, services you no longer require. People now in their forties might work out that they no longer necessitate a health insurance policy that covers pregnancy, for instance!
Shop around for Insurance Providers
The insurance business has always been a thriving one, even in times of crisis. Irrespective of where you live, it is more than likely that the insurance market in your country has several top competitors, vying for your money. Make the effort of shortlisting the best insurance providers, with a long standing in the industry and a proven track record of performance. And be exceptionally weary of scams or companies which don’t look reliable enough to still be on the market in three, five or ten years’ time.
Offers Tailored to Your Needs
Needless to say, every couple, single person or family has very specific health needs. A health insurance policy, which entails a financial effort for the long term, needs to take that into account. Do you need therapy covered? What about health insurance for frequent travelers to foreign countries? Are you planning on having a new baby soon? Your provider should be sensitive to your specific requirements, and always prepared to respond to them appropriately. Be a selective, demanding customer and make sure you get the most bang for your buck. Never accept conditions that you don’t believe will benefit you and always have your broker explain the specifics of each feature on your policy. After all, health-related issues should not be taken lightly, especially when it comes to the costs incurred by you and your family.
Supporters Help Raise Money For Planned Parenthood
GLOBAL GOOD GROUP » Health 3 Feb 2012, 4:48 pm CET
When Susan G. Komen decided to cut breast screening grants to Planned Parenthood, they never thought the backlash would be this bad. Supporters of the Health Organization have rallied behind the group, and the group has received $400,000 in smaller donations from 6,000 people, $250,000 from The Amy and Lee Fikes’ Foundation in Dallas and a $250,000 pledge announced Thursday by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to match future donations.
Komen, meanwhile, has been battling negative press, emails, and Facebook postings, accusing the charity organization of bowing to pressure from anti-abortion groups. Chief Executive Officer Nancy Brinker of Komen said her company initiated a new clause in 2010 that included a clause denying money to any organization under investigation. Susan G. Komen has cited an investigation by Representative Cliff Stearns, a Florida Republican and chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, into whether Planned Parenthood is illegally using government money for abortions as the reason it withdrew the funding.
Nancy Brinker went on to say “We ask a lot of questions” of grantees, “but that’s not one of them.” Funding for Planned Parenthood is less than 1 percent of the $93 million in community health grants that Komen provides.

The Dreaded Spider Vein: How to Get Rid of Them
GLOBAL GOOD GROUP » Health 2 Feb 2012, 7:52 pm CET
You remember your grandmother trying to hide spider veins and now you’re a -gulp- grandmother too. And, just like your grandmother, you have the dreaded spider veins. Thankfully, times have changed since your grandmother battled her blemishes. There are now treatments that will get rid of spider veins, rather than just hiding them. Let’s take a closer look at what these veins really are and what you can do to get rid of them.
What Are Spider Veins?
Think of your veins the same way you would think about plumping. Some pipes have valves that prevent the water from flowing backwards. This is the same way the veins of our body work. Unfortunately, these valves can become weakened as we age due to a number of factors (including weight). When this happens the blood pools in the area and creates spider veins. The reason these veins are so visible is that the collected blood pushes the veins closer to the skin due to swelling.
Options for Getting Rid of Current Veins
There are two popular options that people turn to as a way to heal spider veins. The first option is to have the area treated with a laser. The laser directs light at the area and pulses until the veins collapse. The collected blood absorbs into the body making the veins disappear. The procedure can take up to an hour to complete and can be quite expensive. Another option is to have a solution injected into the blood vessels. The treatment takes less time, but can cost over $1,000. The procedure works by causing the veins to swell and then collapse. Both procedures can be a bit painful, but can clear the affected areas.
Ways to Prevent Future Veins
Once the spider veins are gone, you’re going to want to prevent other veins from appearing. There are a number of easy solutions. First of all, you should consider losing weight, if need be. You should also prop your legs up after being on your feet all day to help prevent the blood from pooling in the legs. You can also choose to wear compression socks and increase your exercise routine.
Spider veins can be unsightly, but you don’t have to live with them. Whether you opt for laser treatment or injection, you can get rid of the problem. You can also work to prevent the veins from coming back in the future.

What are HIIT Workouts?
GLOBAL GOOD GROUP » Health 2 Feb 2012, 5:43 pm CET
It can be frustrating to lift weights for several months and still have a bit of fat here and there. Unfortunately, this often happens, especially with stubborn belly fat. One routine people add to their plan are HIIT workouts. What makes these workouts so impressive? More importantly, why do they work when others don’t? Let’s take a closer look at what HIIT workouts really are.
What Are HIIT Workouts?
Imagine a workout that continues to burn calories long after the session is over. That’s exactly what HIIT (high intensity interval training) workouts do. HIIT workouts are cardio based, but are far more intense than what most are used to. The intensity is so great that the body spends the rest of the day trying to make up for the spent energy – AKA burning fat.
The Benefits
There are numerous benefits to HIIT workouts. Obviously, the biggest benefit is being able to burn calories after the workout is done. Imagine being able to burn 9 times as many calories while watching TV or working on the computer. Another benefit is being able to spend less time working out. Because you’re pushing your body so hard, you get to work out less. Who really wants to spend an hour running on the treadmill when they could cut the time in half doing intense sprints? You’ll also be less likely to lose muscle mass when you opt for HIIT workouts.
The Dangers
HIIT workouts are not without risks. Because the workout requires you to push yourself so hard, it may be dangerous for those with bad hearts. Another danger is the increased use of oxygen, which may be dangerous to those with asthma or other breathing issues. Last, but not least, you are more prone to injury when working out at such an intense level.
Are HIIT workouts a good option for you? It depends. While there are several benefits to these workouts, there are also many risks. Those with health problems may find it extremely dangerous to take on such an intense workout. Last, but not least, those that decide to do this type of training before getting in shape, may injure themselves. However, HIIT workouts can be a wonderful way to kick those last few pounds to the curb without investing your entire afternoon to working out. Best of all, you’ll even burn calories long after the workout is over.
About the Author: Sharice Miniuk is an amateur athlete who is frequently asked about her conditioning and, specifically, how to get ripped fast. She always recommends incorporating at least some HIIT into a workout routine for maximum cardio conditioning.
